The idea behind this is a study in the counting of cars in a European city of a similar size and comparison of the results obtained with the results for the city of Kiev. In this study, I tried to answer the question — “Ok, 414 thousand cars (140 cars per 1000 inhabitants) in Kyiv is it a lot?”

Given that the analysis can be performed on Google images, which are publicly available and can not be limited to the territory, it was decided to take for analysis the nearest neighbor — Poland. The capital of Poland, Warsaw, was chosen for analysis.

Output that is publicly available:

  • Population 2017–1 million 765 thousand (Wikipedia)
  • Area — 517.2 sq. km. (Wikipedia)
  • Date of shooting for analysis — 08.08.2017 (month — August, day of the week — Tuesday) (Google Maps)

Given that I have no borders in Warsaw, a much larger area was chosen, and this provided additional ideas for further analysis. The actual area of the analysis was 1880 sq. km.

Having received the results, he imposed them on the administrative division of Warsaw and the surrounding territories (these data were obtained from open sources — OpenStreetMap). And I realized that the analysis of cars in the capital can be added to the analysis of cars in nearby towns! That is to analyze the possible flow of cars from (to) the capital. For example, in the neighboring village of Pruszkow — 26 thousand 460 cars. And so you can make a calculation for all settlements around the capital.

But let’s go back to Warsaw and compare the results with Kyiv.

According to the analysis of Warsaw, the following results were obtained:

  • Number of cars in the city = 541 thousand

Given a population of 1,765 million

  • Number of cars per 1000 inhabitants = 307

Comparing with the results of Kyiv — (analysis date — 2019, number of cars — 414 thousand, number of inhabitants — 2 million 964 thousand, number of cars per 1000 inhabitants = 140) we come to the conclusion that the number of cars per 1000 inhabitants in Warsaw is 2.2 times more than in Kiev!

Once again — the number of cars per 1000 inhabitants in Warsaw is 2.2 times more than in Kyiv !!!
